Sumario:This article reports that Jane Friedman, CEO of HarperCollins Publishers Inc., gives a typically forthright interview to the Bookseller on page 20. Her success owes a good deal to her ability to ally drive and ambition with candour and a lack of defensiveness. She charms, without soft-soaping. Sympathy with strong personalities is not the same as a desire to head a company in which mavericks hold sway. It is one, global publisher. Her most valued colleagues are "really on my wavelength". She would not want to hire someone who "only wanted a local company". When Ms Friedman started out in her role seven years ago, she advertised that she was keen that HarperCollins buy world rights in books wherever possible.
