Antimicrobial Stewardship in Long-Term Care Facilities: Focus on Suspected Urinary Tract Infection.

Residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are at risk for antibiotic-resistant infections. Often, decisions to prescribe antibiotics are made by an off-site provider without a clear clinical picture on which to base the decision. The result can be antimicrobial misuse.       ab: Residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are at risk for antibiotic-resistant infections. Often, decisions to prescribe antibiotics are made by an off-site provider without a clear clinical picture on which to base the decision. The result can be antimicrobial misuse. Annually, approximately 70% of LTCF residents are prescribed antibiotics, for which urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common diagnosis; however, many antibiotics prescribed are unnecessary or inappropriate (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). The purpose of this project was to evaluate an eLearning module about antimicrobial stewardship education, including the Agency for Health Research and Quality SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Request) communication tool for suspected UTIs and knowledge of nurse practitioners practicing in LTCFs.
