Sumario:Background Antimicrobial resistance to routinely used biocides in the dental environment can potentially impact effective infection control. The decontamination of work surfaces within the dental surgery is often performed with disinfectant wipes with known activity against a range of bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, chemical wipes do not always eliminate all pathogens and can have a hazardous impact when used frequently. Aim To investigate the use of chemical Biocleanse® biocide wipes and an environmentally friendly alternative. The E-cloth Professional® was the chosen alternative since it is used with water and destroys potential pathogens due to nano-silver particles embedded within its fibres. Method The efficacy of Biocleanse® biocide wipes and E-cloth Professional® was investigated microbiologically on selected surfaces in clinics at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. Colony counts were recorded on culture plates and isolates identified to species level. Results The bacterial colony counts using E-cloth Professional® were significantly lower than the counts for the Biocleanse® biocide wipes (p = 0.05). Conclusion The E-cloth Professional® is an effective alternative to Biocleanse® biocide wipes and also has the advantage of being environmentally friendly since it can be reused, and no chemical compounds are required.
