Standard work measurement techniques for nonrepetitive work include time and motion study, self-report, diary, work sampling, expert opinion, historical report, buddy checks, motion pictures, Q-sort and performance rating. Work sampling is a statistical technique for estimating work behavior without having to measure hundred percent of the activities. It utilizes sampling techniques to establish a principle or generalization from a random sampling of the whole. Work sampling is generally used to obtain data about activities where it would be impractical to use a time-study method. One of the assumptions underlying work sampling is that the percentage of observations recording any particular condition reflects to a known degree of accuracy the average percentage of time actually spent in that state or condition. Work sampling is one of the few work measurement techniques that can be applied to nonrepetitive, noncyclic work.
