The loss of home and the predicament of belonging in a 21st century world: postcolonial perspectives with reference to two texts of Breyten Breytenbach.
In a 21st century world, the loss of home is more prevalent, perhaps, than ever before. Breyten Breytenbach is an author whose work embodies and ruthlessly explores a state of non-belonging. Without romancing the idea of the exile, Breytenbach engages with the problematics that a fixed conception of...

Breyten Breytenbach is an author whose work embodies and ruthlessly explores a state of non-belonging. Without romancing the idea of the exile, Breytenbach engages with the problematics that a fixed conception of home suggest in a world in which the movement of people is redefining the relationship between home and country. Similarly, those who remain in a particular place are not isolated from the effects of globalisation and have to contend with their own re-evaluation of what it means to belong? Various questions present themselves: How to ethically interact with others? How to locate oneself in a changed global world? Can one learn from writers’ imaginative re-conceptions of home? In particular, in this essay, how does Breytenbach respond to the challenge of rootlessness with his own unique cosmopolitanism? Does his double vision – a vision that is the result of his simultaneous awareness of a past and present environment – lend us particular insights into the challenge of belonging in a 21st century world? In considering two of his recent works in English: A veil of footsteps (2008) and Notes from the Middle World (2009), I examine how the insights revealed in his work further explore the questions posed above.
