Despite the degree of sophistication and thoroughness that may be present in an articulation program between junior high and senior high, one of the largest problems facing any high school pupil personnel staff is the inability of many freshmen to do well in the high school setting once they get there. As a result, counselors, social workers, deans, and other pupil services people spend a disproportionately large amount of their time working with a small but significantly demanding group of freshmen who soon begin establishing patterns of misbehavior, truancy, failure and accompanying symptoms harmful to themselves and to the rest of the school.
