Adapted from community programs designed for children with physical problems, the Socio-Physical Developmental Program focuses on both the social and the physical behaviors of hospitalized adolescents with emotional handicaps. Counselors working with normally functioning clients may find many aspects of the program applicable to their respective settings, as two unique features of it are especially relevant to counselors. College students represent an ideal source of volunteers for this program. They possess the maturity to gain the respect of adolescents and yet are still close enough to them in age to be able to identify with and relate to many of their developmental tasks and problems.
