| Sumario: | A colostomy formation and Hartmann's procedure for colorectal cancer at age 74 is a huge change in one's life and lifestyle. This surgery has an impact on the individual's independence regardless of the age that the stoma is formed. Eventually this gentleman's health and wellbeing were regained and for 13 years he had a perfectly healthy flush stoma that functioned daily. It was devastating when there was development of acute onset of changes around the peristomal skin following a stroke. This lead to devitalised tissue, pain, loss of appetite and reduced general wellbeing. Eventually this resulted in loss of independence. The cause of this phenomena was elusive for 2 months, during which time the stomal therapy nurse provided support for the patient and his family. This included regular assessments of the tissue and liaising with surgeons as part of consultative efforts to remove the devitalised tissue. A colorectal surgeon from the UK then found some literature on the effects of the drug Nicorandil with ulceration alongside a stoma and this information started the journey toward complete healing and recovery from this very painful ulceration. |
