Phillips offers a comprehensive genealogy of American horror cinema by examining the elements of the genre during their embryonic stage through rhetorical frameworks. In Chapter Five, "Mysteries in Old Dark Houses", Phillips discusses melodrama's influence on films utilising horrific elements during the 1920s. Phillips finds that these mystery thrillers employed narrative frameworks similar to the aforementioned "American uncanny" films but identifies that pleasure in viewing them was predominantly devised through the uncertainty of their horrific and supernatural events and not so much through their resolution. |
