| Summary: | Mazón proves - at least he has convinced this reviewer - that the route taken by the I Victoria i was not in anyone's mind in 1519, that it represented a much steeper nautical challenge than is usually assumed, and that Elcano's men were enthusiastic about it not just for nautical or military reasons but also for an emotional one: the pride of being the first ones to circumnavigate the world. In particular, Mazón finds that Elcano played a more decisive role than hitherto thought in the second part of the expedition. The interest of such funds for the prosopography of the Magellan-Elcano expedition has already been fruitfully demonstrated, in particular by Juan Gil.[3] The additional data that remain to be dug out in a comprehensive study of those documents might have anyway exceeded the physical limits of Mazón's book, but they can certainly still enrich the biographies on his website.
