Sumario:	The article discusses the impediment posed by the story of villain Devadatta to the introduction of the Christian faith in 17th-century Siam by the French. Buddhists believe Devadatta was impaled in hell for killing an enlightened person or an arhat, wounding the Buddha and causing dissent in the monastic community. It explains the interest of French in his story. Also noted is the possibility of a constructive dialogue on salvation and damnation between the Christians and Buddhists.
