On the verbal fluency task, we asked 45 healthy participants (mean age = 23.55 years) to generate as many words as possible beginning with the letter "P," whereas on the control task we asked them to count aloud. In both tasks we recorded pupil dilation with eye-tracking glasses. Results demonstrated that, compared with counting, verbal fluency resulted in a larger pupil dilation. The larger pupil dilation observed during verbal fluency compared with counting can be attributed to the cognitive load of verbal fluency, which involves both linguistic processing and executive function.
