| Sumario: | Human interaction is fundamental in a service economy where service providers provide service to service recipients. As such, whether service is provided in an ethical way is of paramount importance. In the Service Leadership Theory (SLT) proposed by Dr. Po Chung, Co- Founder of DHL International, moral character is regarded as a vital component of successful service leadership. Through the interviews with Dr. Po Chung and his colleagues and an examination of the published work in SLT, we attempted to answer three questions in this paper: a) why is moral character important in the service economy? b) how is moral character conceived in the SLT? c) how is moral character manifested in the organizational culture of DHL International? We also reviewed the concept of moral character in the existing leadership models and research with reference to the SLT. It is concluded that moral character is an important element of successful leadership in the Western and Chinese contexts. |
