This article shows how research findings concerning the mothers of children with learning problems helped to focus the treatment on certain aspects of a mother-child interaction and how the casework experience, in turn, elaborated and expanded the research findings. A specific case was presented to illustrate the role of maternal secrecy and derogation in the inhibition of a child's learning. It was possible to look beyond the research sampling of such attitudes and to specify the cognitive deficits that needed to be remedied in the mother's relationship to the son.
