Summary:Cross-modal integration for perception and action is paramount for optimal function in the world. Humans are bombarded with sensation from a very young age. Sensory systems assist by encoding and melding a colossal amount of information into a solid perception as the higher brain centers decide on an action plan. Auditory and visual systems are major players in weaving perception into a solid unit since they provide feedforward and feedback input. Perception of sound directs attention, which in turn guides eye movements towards the stimulus, bringing the musculoskeletal system into action. This investigative literature review will bring current multisensory integration research (audition and vision) into the limelight and explore its application in clinical therapy settings. Visual and auditory retraining must occur in synchrony or in correspondence with one another to maximize the efficiency of both systems. Under this premise, auditory cues can be allied with visual cues to muster a wholesome unified perception of the world. According to neuroscience, stimulus synchronicity and proximity of time and space can greatly improve attention and therefore enhance response. Optimal attention via multisensory integration can improve visual performance.
