National and European initiatives have started to empower older adults in living a healthy and active life. Active assisted living (AAL) technologies are promising to support independent and healthy living in old age. Method Recent European initiatives to enhance active and healthy living in old age are discussed in comparison with current AAL funding and research objectives. Further research experiences and related results from involved AAL projects will be discussed in order to identify ongoing obstacles and ethical issues in the field of AAL. Results and Discussion User involvement and needs requirements are main prerequisites for the development of AAL technologies for older adults. Nevertheless, so far only few older adults are equipped with AAL at home and most prototypes do not succeed in becoming a final business product.
