| Sumario: | Purpose Since e-Health has the potential to facilitate aging in place (AIP) in older adults with cognitive impairments, such as MCI (PwMCI) and dementia (PwD), we reviewed recent research findings on the effectiveness of these solutions. Method We completed a systematic search in PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, PsyclNFO, Web of Science, Embase and Sociological Abstracts. Inclusion criteria were: (1) quantitative or mixed methods study designs, (2) published from 2013 until 2019, (3) evaluating at least one e-Health solution (4) targeted at (a) community-dwelling PwMCI, PwD or older adults with a risk for cognitive impairment or (b) their informal caregivers (ICs). Results & Discussion A total of 12988 articles were reviewed, of which 74 were included in the descriptive analysis. The majority of articles were published in non-technological peer-reviewed journals (81 %). Most studies were published in Europe (47%), North America (39%) and East Asia (8%). Research designs were: randomized controlled trials (43%), nonrandomized quantitative studies (50%) and mixed-methods (7%). Most studies included exclusively ICs (37%), PwMCI (26%) or PwD (22%). However, some studies included mixed samples with the majority of them combining PwD with ICs (12%). E-health solutions aimed at supporting PwMCI/PwD with cognitive training (33%) and ICs with educational/supportive web platforms (28%) were the most frequently described. The studies reported mostly positive or neutral effects of the e-Health solutions. The most frequently reported outcome measures were related to psychosocial functioning, cognition and caregiving aspects. These findings show that e-Health solutions are promising for supporting PwMCI, PwD and ICs and thus facilitating AIP. However, it is important to overcome methodological limitations in this research domain (e.g. using experimental designs like controlled trials), in order to further extend the body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of these solutions.
