Sumario:The design, construction, and performance characterization of an inexpensive home-built laser light scatter particle sizer is presented. Light scatters off small particles with greater or lesser efficiency depending on the ratio of particle size to wavelength of light. The instrument collects and measures the scattered light from two lasers of different colors. The ratio of scatter intensities can give the size of the particles scattering the light. This instrument is purpose-built to determine the size of particles passing through the channel of a microfluidic device. The performance of the particle sizer was characterized by collecting data on a set of particle size standards passing through a simple microfluidic device.
