Flügel does so by magisterially combining documents from Klatt's life issued by the academic institutions he passed through and worked in, letters by Klatt, his family, and his colleagues, as well as socio-historical data about the period that make Klatt's professional trajectory appear before the readers' eyes with great clarity. All that was known about Klatt's life so far, we owe to a footnote added by Leumann to an article by his friend published posthumously.[3] Flügel unfolds that note into a panorama that is not limited to the nascent field of Jain Studies but places Klatt's life in the larger context of the burgeoning world of Germanophone Indology during the "Gründerzeit" following the industrial revolution in Central Europe into the early decades of the German Empire.
