While this rivalry is longstanding, during the 2000s and 2010s, it was reconfigured in relation to the state government's efforts to brand Pernambuco as a multicultural place. Accordingly, I analyze how middle-class participants at events hosted by a government institution that I call the Fundação Cultural de Pernambuco, disparage two Bahian dance genres: axé music and swingueira (a.k.a. pagode baiano), in ways that intertwine racial and class-based stereotypes. I therefore argue that the stigmatization of northeastern people is not exclusive to the hegemonic southeast, but it is also (re)produced within the northeast. This case thus demonstrates how place-based branding enables individuals and institutions to reproduce and justify social inequality. A partir de uma pesquisa etnográfica sobre a música contemporânea no Recife, este artigo utiliza a rivalidade musical entre os estados vizinhos de Pernambuco e Bahia como uma lente para entender a (re)construção das identidades e marcas nordestinas. Ainda que essa rivalidade seja antiga, durante as décadas de 2000 e 2010, ela foi recontextualizada dentro dos esforços do governo estadual em construir a imagem de Pernambuco como um lugar multicultural. A partir da análise de eventos organizados pela agência estadual (Fundação Cultural de Pernambuco) demonstro como o público de classe média caracteriza dois gêneros musicais baianos, o axé music e a swingueira (pagode baiano), em formas que interligam estereótipos de raça e classe. Consequentemente, argumento que a estigmatização dos nordestinos não ocorre apenas no sudeste, mas também se (re)produz no nordeste.
