| Sumario: | As the science has grown around the female athlete triad, researchers have gained a greater understanding of the consequences that low-energy availability has on both men and women's bodies. In 2014, experts defined relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), a gender-inclusive model comprehensive of all body systems impacted by energy deficiency. RED-S is prevalent, affecting up to 22% to 58% of women in various sports and physical activities, but it is not well understood among healthcare providers. Women's healthcare providers play an important role in providing female athletes with education on fueling their bodies with the energy necessary to promote health and wellness while supporting performance goals. This article provides nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals with a clinical overview of RED-S and how its health implications may impact issues relevant to women's healthcare. |
