While the deployment of its figures might be accounted for in diverse ways, suggestions that the complexity of the textual operations entails a simple model of tradition or influence which cannot offer an adequate account. The quest for models of republican politics gave classical antiquity an unprecedented bold on the political discourse of the revolutionary period.
