According to "Chaucer Life-Records," our knowledge of the London vintner's spell of military service in the summer of 1327 rests upon the inclusion of his name on a surviving roll of a company led by John de Bedford. Amongst a bundle of fourteenth century military records is a roll of names, which in number and rank designation fit the known proportions of John de Bedford's retinue precisely. The seventy men listed include John Chaucer and his half brother, Thomas Heyronn.
