ab: As a book historian, I welcome fresh insight into the business practices of Victorian authors and publishers, because so much remains that we do not know about the Victorian publishing world. The later chapters, on Macmillan and professional associations, share the general strengths of the chapter on Watt, emphasizing one or two individuals in the organization with ample archival evidence. In Joseph's argument, Watt clearly illustrates how new publishing practices developed, became normalized, and thus were widely adopted in the literary marketplace.
