ab: The article analyses the understanding of the phenomenon of death by the Western European philosophers-existentialists. The research is structured according to the objectives and tasks. It separately analyses the understanding of the phenomenon of death by the philosophers-existentialists of religious origin and atheistic movement, and that lets to identify the common things in the vision of the phenomenon of death by the existentialists and the certain aspects, that is characteristic only for philosophers’ atheistic or religious positions. The basic research methods are a method of philosophical analysis and a method of comparative analysis. The article points the recognition of the biological fact of death by philosophers that makes life absurd according to supporters of the atheistic positions, and the recognition of death as a supernatural dimension of reality. The comprehension of their own death goes beyond human consciousness and imagination. Research suggests that the existentialists don’t deny a person’s inability to state their own death and imagine themselves dead. A person can’t understand a death through their death, but he can through other people’s deaths. The article pays attention to the emotional and metaphysical characteristic of death that were noted and studied by the philosophers-existentialists. On an emotional level a death is related not only to the fears about future, but to aggression and wish for other’s deaths too. Along with it the existentialists view a death as a process of updating a person’s worldview and an incentive for developing. And the phenomenon of death raises and issue about the values of each life and uniqueness of each person.
