The ideological struggle took place in the political context of the liberal revolution and allowed the ultramontanes to promote the institutional and theological Romanization of the Church. However, they encountered resistance from the liberal-Gallican Catholics, whose ideas were based on liberal and Gallican political theories. The article analyzes the political-theological positions regarding the Church and the papacy, and how these changes led to the consolidation of ultramontanism and Romanization in Peru. El artículo analiza la controversia eclesiológica en el Perú entre los sectores católicos ultramontanos y liberales-galicanos en el período de 1855 a 1857. La pugna ideológica se dio en el contexto político de la revolución liberal y permitió a los ultramontanos promover la romanización institucional y teológica de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, encontraron resistencia por parte de los católicos liberales-galicanos, cuyas ideas se basaban en teorías políticas liberales y galicanas.
