Sumario:With the trend towards shorter hospital stays, patients have limited time to learn ostomy care before going home. Educating on how to manage peristomal skin problems if they occur is therefore a key component for the patient to learn. This allows them to prevent skin complications and to live independently with their stoma. Importantly, this includes being aware of when to contact your stomal therapy nurse and what is normal peristomal skin and what is not. This case study aims to report on how the use of a barrier infused with Manuka honey assisted to resolve peristomal skin issues caused by the incorrect use of a hard convex appliance with tape. This resulted in a return of quality of life (QoL) and independence for a 51-year-old male with spina bifida. The author found that the unique qualities of Manuka honey assisted in creating an optimal peristomal environment to promote adhesion, protect skin and maximise absorption without maceration. Further, the use of a hernia support belt enabled him to feel secure when transferring in and out of his wheelchair, further enhancing his QoL and ability to return to self-care with most of his activities of daily living (ADLs).
