Focusing on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Toni's Cabin 0 852), Elizabeth Gaskells North and South (1 855). and Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), the articles main concern is to examine how these narratives, published during the decade that preceded the Civil War in the United States and during the time when English manufacturers from the North enjoyed prosperity. portrayed and explained the differences and similarities in the lives of African slaves in the United States and poor workers in England. Attempting to draw parallels between the two types of oppression. these texts discuss racial and class inequalities closely investigating the intricate issue of enslavement.
