| Sumario: | This article provides information on the employment unemployment data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Employment Data in the Household Survey data section are obtained from the Current Population Survey, a program of personal interviews conducted monthly by the Bureau of the Census for the BLS. The sample consists of about 60,000 households selected to represent the U.S. population 16 years of age and older. Data presented in the Unemployment Data by State section are obtained from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics program, which is conducted in cooperation with State employment security agencies. Monthly estimates of the labor force, employment, and unemployment for States and sub-State areas are a key indicator of local economic conditions, and form the basis for determining the eligibility of an area for benefits under Federal economic assistance programs such as the Job Training Partnership Act. Employment, wage, and established data in the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages section are derived from the quarterly tax reports submitted to State employment security agencies by private and State and local government employers subject to State unemployment insurance laws and from Federal, agencies subject to the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees program. Each quarter, State agencies edit and process the data and send the information to the BLS. Data for the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey are collected and compiled from a sample of 16,000 business establishments. Each month, data are collected for total employment, job openings, hires, quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations.
