| Sumario: | The article presents information on employment and unemployment data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the household survey data, the sample consists of about 60,000 households selected to represent the U.S. population 16 years of age and older. Households are interviewed on rotating basis, so that three-fourths of the sample is the same for any 2 consecutive months. From time to time, adjustment are made in the Current Population Survey figures to correct for estimating errors during the intercensal years. These adjustments affect the comparability of historical data. Data presented in the unemployment by state section are obtained from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics program, which is conducted in cooperation with state employment security agencies. Monthly estimates of the labor force, employment and unemployment for states and sub-state areas are a key indicator of local economic conditions, and form the basis for determining the eligibility of an area for benefits under federal economic assistance programs such as the U.S. Job Training Partnership Act. Employment, wage and establishment data in this quarterly census of employment and wages section are derived from the quarterly tax reports submitted to state employment security agencies by private and state and local government employers subject to state unemployment insurance laws and from federal agencies subject to the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees program. The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages data are the most complete enumeration of employment and wage information by industry at the national state, metropolitan area and county levels.
