A spate of studies has gendered Ghanaian historiography and mainstreamed women's history in recent years. With regard to the Gold Coast, the existing literature on women's activism has stressed coastal women's accumulation of wealth, exercise of authority, and efforts to improve women lives. Apart from signifying the columnist's breadth of knowledge about women's struggles elsewhere and the importance of liberating women from the tentacles of patriarchy, the allusion was in essence geared to preparing the women of the Gold Coast for the struggles ahead.
