It reads Kamal’s biopic Celluloid (2013) in the light of Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Spac...

ab: Film and cinema are two phenomena that seem synonymous but are actually different.1 The paper examines the dialectical tension a spectator encounters while traveling from reality2 to re-presented reality. It reads Kamal’s biopic Celluloid (2013) in the light of Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1994b) and Pierre Bourdieu’s Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste (1979). The argument is developed on the basis of three spaces—filmic space, social space, and cinematic space—in order to establish that these three spaces encompass the filmmaker, the film, and the spectator. The study reads Celluloid as primarily a readerly text that becomes a writerly one when the social space creates a dialectical mediation between the outside and the inside.
