ab: Folk romances are one of the genres that occupy a large place in Kurdish oral folk literature. The loves in these romance are often tragic and the lovers die before they can meet each other. The tragedy in love is often due to social reasons. These reasons are differences in class status between the lovers or differences in religion and sect. Sometimes this tragedy is also caused by the tyranny of the authorities. However, when these tragic loves are turned into oral narratives, these social reasons are censored and replaced with deceptive and deceitful characters or motifs. In the context of this issue, we analyzed Memê Alan and Khalil Beg û Gewrê folk romances that deal with the subject of tragic love in Kurdish oral narrative. While trying to reveal the historical background of these folk romances, we focused on the content of the oral narratives. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the two anthogonist characters named Beko and Xelo in these stories are both deceptive and deceitful, as well as victims. It is true that they are deceptive and deceitful motifs within the framework of oral narrative. But in reality they are victims created by the public, performers and authorities in order to censor the real causes of tragic loves.
