Sumario:Within the music fraternity in South Africa, Qinisela Sibisi is respected as one of the more prolific composers in the country. However, a review of available literature showed that there is a lamentable lack of scholarly research about Sibisi's life and his body of work. Framed within an interpretive philosophical perspective, this article explores how Sibisi's beliefs, perceptions and experiences shape his secular cantata Amandla Awethu! The cantata was commissioned by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) to commemorate the uprising that occurred in 1976 in Soweto, South Africa. The article contributes to filling the gap in the scholarly literature about the life and work of the composer; more specifically, the commissioned work. Data was collected through an interview and written and verbal communication with the composer. Themes that emerged during the data analysis pointed towards how various levels of Sibisi's beliefs, perceptions and experiences informed a work that is rich in its inclusion of characteristics from different music genres, speaks to the history of a society, contributes to the social consciousness of that society and points towards how the events of 16 June 1976 should inform future generations of young people.
