Many studies support using social for knowledge sharing in clinical care settings to improve public health by facilitating health behavior change and communication between professionals. Objectives The aim is to describe social networks used by nurses for professional purposes. Materials and methods A descriptive observational study was conducted on the Italian nursing population using an ad hoc constructed online questionnaire. Results A total of 1005 nurses responded to the data collection who agreed that they find a wide variety of professionally helpful information on social networking sites, can compare themselves with colleagues efficiently, and reach out to most of their patients. In contrast, more than half stated that they did not find social media reliable for searching for scientific information. Discussion and conclusions The results show that social networking is useful for communication between nurses, with potential benefits in clinical practice, professional networks, education and training. Lack of adequate knowledge may lead to a poor understanding of the risks and responsibilities associated with the use of social Introduzione I social network vengono ampiamente utilizzati sia dai professionisti sanitari sia dai cittadini per accedere alle informazioni sanitarie e per cercare supporto. La letteratura internazionale sostiene l'utilizzo dei social per la condivisione della conoscenza in ambito clinico-assistenziale, per migliorare la salute pubblica, facilitare il cambiamento dei comportamenti sanitari e favorire la comunicazione tra i professionisti. Obiettivi Descrivere i social network utilizzati dagli infermieri per scopi professionali. Materiali e metodi È stato condotto uno studio osservazionale descrittivo sulla popolazione infermieristica italiana, utilizzando un questionario online costruito ad hoc. Risultati Alla raccolta dati hanno risposto 1005 professionisti, i quali risultano essere d'accordo nel dichiarare che sui social trovano ampia varietà di informazioni utili a livello professionale, riescono a confrontarsi facilmente con i colleghi e a raggiungere la maggior parte delle persone assistite. Invece, più della metà ha dichiarato di non ritenere affidabili i social per la ricerca di informazioni scientifiche. Discussione e conclusioni I risultati dello studio evidenziano che i social sono utili per la comunicazione tra infermieri, con potenziali benefici nella pratica clinica, nelle reti professionali, nell'istruzione e nella formazione.
