Nijkerk and the publisher A.A.M. Stols had joined forces to set up a bibliophile series. The series comprises nine volumes in all. The authors were primarily recruited from Greshoff's circle of friends. The design of the published volumes was well-considered, but lacked the exuberance of comparable bibliophile editions. The reason for this was not only financial but also idealistic, for in spite of his love for the fine book, Greshoff gave priority to the contents.
