As the ancient historian Henk Versnel observes, while we may see a strong contrast between Vernant's and Burkert's descriptions of the gods, they both come to the same conclusion, that it is not possible to describe a god in isolation from other gods: 'While for Vernant the coexistence and relationships of gods are the I conditio sine qua non i for an individuation of each god, for Burkert the very same pluralist variety of gods and their transformations constitute the germs of the potentially chaotic nature of Greek polytheism.'[30] Chaos or coexistence?
