| Summary: | This article highlights the importance of electronic communication networks such as the Internet in helping the development processes in Africa. The Internet might be seen by some types of people in developed countries as a, a game, an entertainment, a new multimedia medium providing nice graphics and images. Its need and value are not fully understood in a society stuffed with information. Information, information technologies and data networks have a fundamental role in the development of our societal and cultural environments. Their role is better understood in the context of developing countries. The Internet and other communication networks are actual development tools, as important as educational, agricultural and training programmes. The African continent has the least developed telecommunication network in the world. The International Telecommunication Union indicates for the African continent in 1994 a teledensity of 1.6 (45 in Europe) and 1.2 outside the large urban centres. The main networking projects being developed or in working condition on the African continent have chiefly been created by non-governmental agencies and are mainly research education networks.
