| Sumario: | This article assesses the health of the indigenous people in Australia. The author cites that nationwide, about 45 percent of Aboriginal men will die before the age of 45. And about 34 percent of Aboriginal women will not reach that same early middle age. In the heartland of the country, there is a genuine emergency that warrants the most urgent response. Syndrome X the doctors call it. It is a modern plague of chronic illness that is scything through several generations of Australian citizens. The author questions why government and media aren't marshalling a determined nation-wide response to Australia and its problems. He relates how Syndrome X could possibly be the result of many decades of neglect, lack of education and inequity. It is the diseases of poverty like scabies that make this epidemic of so-called lifestyle illnesses so much worse for Indigenous people. |
