| Sumario: | After encountering the writings of neoliberal economist Friedrich Hayek in the late 1970s, the political scientist Tom Flanagan became one of the most well-known Hayekians in Canada. Over the course of a career devoted mainly to the study of Louis Riel, Metis history, and the policies of Canadian settler colonialism, Flanagan developed a particular kind of "settler-neoliberalism." This article takes a broad view of Flanagan's intellectual development in order to show that, once Flanagan is situated transnationally in the appropriate intellectual currents, his work stands out and represents the most thoroughgoing effort, if not the only one, to deploy neoliberal ideas systematically in the service, or the defence, of a settler-colonial project. By examining the ways in which neoliberal ideas enabled Flanagan's defence of settler colonialism, this article concludes ultimately that neoliberalism has been a collaborative companion to the Canadian settler-colonial project. Depuis qu'il a découvert les écrits de l'économiste néolibéral Friedrich Hayek à la fin des années 1970, le politologue Tom Flanagan est devenu l'un des hayekiens les plus connus du Canada. Durant sa carrière principalement consacrée à l'étude de Louis Riel, à l'histoire des Métis et aux politiques concernant le colonialisme de peuplement canadien, Flanagan a conçu un type particulier de « néolibéralisme de colonisation ». Cet article présente une vue d'ensemble de l'évolution intellectuelle de Flanagan dans le but de montrer qu'une fois situé sur le plan transnational au milieu des courants intellectuels appropriés, son travail se démarque et représente l'effort le plus approfondi, sinon le seul, qui répande systématiquement les idées néolibérales au service, ou à la défense, du projet de colonialisme de peuplement. Après avoir examiné la manière dont les idées néolibérales ont permis à Flanagan de défendre le colonialisme de peuplement, l'auteur conclut que le néolibéralisme a contribué au projet de colonie de peuplement canadien. |
