AI comes up with battery design that uses less lithium.

Researchers at Microsoft have used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a battery that relies less on lithium, a metal that is expensive and environmentally damaging to mine. The team created a battery that uses up to 70% less lithium than competing versions by focusing on a type of battery that...

ab: Researchers at Microsoft have used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a battery that relies less on lithium, a metal that is expensive and environmentally damaging to mine. The team created a battery that uses up to 70% less lithium than competing versions by focusing on a type of battery that only contains solid parts and searching for new materials for the electrolyte component. Using an AI algorithm, the researchers identified a material with promising properties and synthesized it in the lab. Although the battery currently has lower conductivity than prototypes using more lithium, the researchers believe it can be improved. The use of AI in this research has accelerated calculations that physicists have been doing for decades.
