| Sumario: | For years, Brazil has struggled to minimize its neonatal mortality rate and provide proper care for newborns before birth. Neonatal mortality is death occurring within the first twenty-eight days of life. Newborns who die within this period usually suffer from neonatal diseases, congenital disabilities, and, more commonly, the effects of preterm birth. There are many leading causes ranging from diseases passed down from mother to child, environmental conditions, and lack of access to health services. Proposed plans to reduce neonatal mortality and disabilities include having clinics that extend to the underserved parts of Brazil, affordable and effective healthcare, pregnancy prevention methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies in younger and older women where there is greater risk, and international efforts in setting up hospitals with emphasis on maternity and neonatal health.
