ab: The war between Russia and Ukraine, which started in 2022, led to serious discussions in the social sciences. On of the most widespread mainstream approaches explains this war through reductionist approaches that refers to clash of civilizations thesis between the East and the West, lacks class-based analysis and ignores differences between social classes, and is shaped around culture, identity, and religious motives. The second of these approaches argues that the war is a result of the desire of an authoritarian regime embodied in the person of Russian president Vladimir Putin. This approach is erroneous view that consists of confusing the concept of authoritarianism in the Weberian sense and, as a continuation of this inaccuracy, the concept of authoritarianism of a person or clique and authoritarianism of the state. The third main argument on the origins of the war is a reductionist view based on security studies and ignores the other factors. This study argues against these approaches and claims that the war between Russia and Ukraine is neither a clash between liberal democracy and authoritarian regimes, nor a military conflict or polarization between the NATO members and Eastern bloc countries. On the other hand, this study asserts that this process reflects the crisis of hegemony in the international arena, in which the contradictions inherent in imperialism are involved not only between imperialist states but also between different fractions of capital. Finally, this study contributes to debates within social sciences and wider analysis of how theories of imperialism can be employed to reflect the place of NATO, which defends the liberal democracy, in the current international order.
