It examines various cultural examples, such as the Hijra community in South Asia, the burrneshat of the Balkans, and eunuchs in the Byzantine world, to illustrate the complexity of gender identities. The article also discusses existing data standards and models for gender classification, emphasizing the need for representation of gender fluidity and transitions. The RELEVEN project is introduced as a test bed for implementing a new method of recording gender as an event in historical databases.
