The evidence for why our limited public resources should currently be spent on expanding this technology into community hospitals is lacking. When planning for the investment in new technology, potentially cost-effective modalities such as in vivo and ex vivo microscopy should be considered. La mise en oeuvre de la pathologie numérique exige une dépense supplémentaire dont le rapport coût-efficacité dans un modèle canadien a fait l'objet d'une validation externe très limitée. Force est de reconnaître que la pathologie numérique permet une extraction de données allant au-delà des attentes de certain·e·s pathologistes. C'est une condition préalable à l'introduction de l'intelligence artificielle, une frontière passionnante pour la recherche. Or, les données probantes permettant de justifier de consacrer à l'heure actuelle nos ressources publiques limitées au déploiement de cette technologie dans les hôpitaux communautaires font défaut.
