ab: This article focuses on the growing importance of online academic conferences. With the growth of the Internet, opportunities for keeping in touch with colleagues, making new contacts, and staying abreast of current research are becoming more convenient and less expensive. In recent years, electronic, on-line conferences have been added to the smorgasbord of professional meetings and opportunities for interactions with peers. These conferences can provide many of the benefits that face-to-face events do, that is, the chance to listen to and ask questions of known experts in the field, the chance to meet others who share similar research and teaching interests, and the chance to overhear some lively debate regarding just about anything. At the same time, because people can participate from anywhere, any time, as long as they have a modem and computer link to the Internet, on-line conferences can ameliorate some of the limitations of tight time schedules and shrinking travel budgets.
