The aim of this review is to highlight the importance of electronic crossmatch (EXM) in transfusion science in New Zealand and across the globe, in consideration of the advantages and disadvantages. Several articles and guidelines were used to understand the background, implementation, characteristics, and features of EXM in medical laboratories. Interestingly, the prerequisites for utilising EXM varies across the globe and some transfusion centres do not approve EXM at all.
