| Sumario: | This article examines negotiations with feminism and women's liberation in Barbados in response to International Women's Year during the UN decade for women (1975–1985). It reveals negotiations with women's liberation and feminism by a group of Barbadian women identified as "middle-class" and as members of women's organizations as well as those of men and state managers with access to the popular press. The declaration of IWY incited contestations over common-sense knowledge about gender relations. The Barbadian women who published in the magazines examined in this article challenged many of the aspects of the gendered status quo in terms of equality and education but always within a very liberal framework. The result is that they espoused a very conservative gender politics in which they distanced themselves from same-sex sexuality and ultimately from erotic autonomy. |
