ab: Johann Ulrich Megerle, known as Abraham a Sancta Clara, was one of the most prominent preachers of the German-speaking world in the 17th century. He was also a great writer, leaving behind a corpus of some 600 books. His fame continued into the following centuries, extending from Goethe to Schiller and Heidegger. His work written during the Turkish Siege of Vienna II is extremely important in terms of showing the European view of the Turks at that time. This article analyses his famous work titled Auff, auff, ihr Christen! in detail using text analysis and questions what kind of a portrait of Turks and Muslims is drawn based on 17th century Vienna. In the analysis, it is seen that Sancta Clara characterises the Turks with extremely negative adjectives and epithets on the axis of barbarism and savagery. However, what makes the analysed work more interesting is that the author also expresses the virtues of the Turks in addition to negative adjectives. The fact that the author devotes a significant part of the work to positive aspects about the enemy that surrounded the capital city where he lived provides interesting data.
