| Sumario: | Nuclear power is back on the political agenda as countries work towards net zero by 2050. In Australia, the coalition responded to Labor's clean energy program by proposing the adoption of nuclear power. This article considers whether Australia needs nuclear energy to reach its targets given its abundant sources of clean energy. It differentiates nuclear power from a nuclear industry and analyses the difficulties, timelines and costs governments have to overcome to bring a nuclear power plant online. It concludes that achieving broad community support is particularly important in a democracy. |
